  • Level 2 Mountain Bike Leader Award Training

    Saturday, 20 July 2019 - Sunday, 21 July 2019
    Porlock

    Course overview
The Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Award is the entry point for most aspirant mountain bike leaders, enabling qualified leaders to use their experience to safely guide others on off-road terrain. The award is ideal for anyone with experience in mountain biking, who is either working in the outdoor sector, volunteering at a club or simply has a personal interest in gaining additional skills. These skills can be used to go out on a mountain bike, be safe and have fun.

Following registration for the award, learners book a two-day training course with a British Cycling accredited provider. A one-day practical assessment will follow after a consolidation period agreed with your tutor. This allows sufficient time for you to hone all those new skills and knowledge you have obtained during training.

    Course content
The course covers a wide variety of topics including:

planning and delivery of appropriate rides or your group
leading techniques for effective group management
map reading and navigation for a flowing journey
management of accidents and emergency situations
    equipment set-up and trailside repairs
    core mountain bike techniques
    Pre-requisites
To attend the training you will need to:

Be 18 years old or over.
Have mountain biking experience in a variety of terrain and weather conditions.
Be competent in the techniques and skills required to safely negotiate the typical trail features encountered in the Level 2 environment. As a general guide this is comparable to red-graded purpose-built trails.
Hold a current two-day outdoor First Aid certificate (this can be undertaken at a later date, but ideally is submitted shortly after assessment). For further details on context and outdoor industry best practice guidelines please see the requirements under band 3 within the Insitute of Outdoor Learning first aid statement.
You will need to provide your tutor with a logbook of evidence of your recent rides in appropriate terrain (we recommend a minimum of 15 quality rides in the 12 months prior to assessment, four of which should be 4 hours or more in duration). A logbook will be sent to you upon registering for the awards (discuss alternative methods for logging the information required with your tutor). The logbook should provide evidence not only of the location, duration and route of the rides but also demonstrate to the tutor your ability to self-reflect on each ride, for example, how you performed, how the conditions impacted the experience, if you had been leading a group what might you have had to consider? We strongly encourage learners to conduct as much riding and navigation as possible outside of a trail centre environment in preparation for training and assessment.
What do we consider to be a quality ride in preparation for training and assessment as a Mountain Bike Leader?

    Involvement in planning and leadership.
Adverse conditions may be encountered and map based navigation skills required.
Experience of terrain and weather comparable to UK conditions.
Attention is paid to safety, increasing knowledge and practising skills.
The ride will include sections of technical difficulty which reflect the Level 2 or 3* environment (*as appropriate).
Journeys are likely to contain a proportion of ascent and descent throughout.
Learners must have an appropriate level of physical fitness for a day’s riding in the level 2 leading environment. This environment is as follows:

    is rideable at walking speed
is rollable on descents so that wheels are not required to leave the ground
    has an obvious line choice
is 90% rideable by the entire group
is no more than half an hour’s walk from where an ambulance can get to
the maximum leader-to-rider ratio should not exceed 1:8
is during daylight in normal summer and intermediate seasonal conditions.

Registration with British Cycling’s Mountain Bike Leadership Programme
Prior to booking onto a training course you need to pay a one-off cost to register with British Cycling’s MTB Leadership Programme.

You will then be provided you with the training handbook, log book and free Ride Membership valid for one year.

If you do not regularly work with young people or do not have evidence of completing safeguarding training, you will need to complete online training and a short online assessment. If this is the case, we will provide log in details for an online learning programme ‘Child Protection Awareness in Sport and Active Leisure’. A free link to this online safeguarding training course is included in the cost of registration and is made available upon request.

If you have already completed safeguarding training and assessment, you should send a copy of your certificate to [email protected] Alternatively, if you regularly work with young people, a letter from the organisation you work for verifying your competency in a safeguarding role also satisfies this requirement.

    Sunday, 04 August 2019

Join us for the 'Ultimate Exmoor MTB Experience', where we get to show you what Exmoor has to offer!

Exmoor's more natural answer to Bike Park Wales!

We'll drive you up, blast it down, and show you the very best of Exmoor!

Your guide is a British Cycling Leadership Tutor, with 20 years MTB experience on Exmoor, with the ability to tie up the very best trails on Exmoor, for you to enjoy, taking in natural trails, as used in some of the local Enduro races, as well as some manmade and natural hidden gems.

With a 6 seater van, pick up truck and a custom bike trailer, we'll meet in Porlock Weir, then head up onto the moors, saving time on the uphills, so we can all enjoy the downhills.

We will aim for at least 7 uplifts throughout the day (usually 8 or 9) including Dunkery Beacon, as well as Porlock Hill and Ley Hill, taking in roughly 30-45km of trails. This will be a fast paced day of riding, taking in the awesome views, but aiming to keep things flowing, to enjoy as much riding as possible.

This is a guiding day for experienced riders, with all their own equipment and a fully functioning mountain bike (recommended full suspension).

Riders are expected to be of a level that don't require coaching or skills development, but happy to take on rocky, technical, steep and rooty descents. If you're unsure whether this is for you, please get in touch.

Snacks and hot drinks will be available, as well as hot pasties for lunch.

The day will finish with a descent into Porlock Weir, where you can clean your bikes down with Fenwick's Ltd products, before heading home.

    What do our customers say...

"We really enjoyed the Ultimate Exmoor day last weekend. Jack and Ben looked after us very well - great guiding, 10 uplifts led to a really wide range of fun descents. We had delicious pasties for lunch. Ben was always waiting with the van when we got to the bottom. We had a good bunch of people to ride with. Totally exhausted by the end of the day. I highly recommend it, and we may well have to come back for another go..." Cathy, April 2019.

"Fantastic outfit, really well managed with great local knowledge.
Exmoor uplift is awesome, do it!" Bruce, March 2019

"Had an epic day with dan and his crew!! Highly recommend, money well spent on this great setup and phenomenal riding.
